IFFF exists since 1994 and over the past 12 years it "has become known as one of the premiere locations where producers and creators interested in the family film genre can network, do business and share insights with one another". This year it moved from Santa Clarita Valley to Hollywood.

The festival gives a special attention to animation, and has established an award named "Friz". The festival honored such brilliant filmmakers as the author of Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Silvester and Speedy Gonsales Isadore 'Friz' Freleng - he was the first laureate and the award was named after him later, Joseph Barbera, Chuck Jones, Charles Schultz, Roy E. Disney, the authors of "Shrek" Andrew Adamson, Kelly Ashbury and Conrad Vernon, and others. This year, for the occasion of 100th anniversary, the award was again posthumously given to Fritz Freleng.
